My personal recommendation is once you pick up a pedometer (you can find simple ones at Target for around $15) and just use it for 2-3 days to see how many steps you naturally take. Once you figure that out, make a goal of 500 more per day for a week or two, and increase it by 500 every couple of weeks. I started out taking about 4,500 a day and now I'm up to around 8,500 a day.
